The result is "Good People," a film that gives voice to the survivors of the Pulse nightclub fire in Kočani, North Macedonia, in 2025.
The fire, sparked by indoor fireworks, claimed 63 lives and injured 193, exposing the club's unlicensed status and severe safety violations. Manchevski's documentary aims to provide a platform for the survivors' experiences, emotions, and thoughts, ensuring their stories are not overshadowed by political agendas. He wanted to create an honest narrative for future generations, a challenging task given the media's initial focus on political turmoil and accusations of corruption.
Manchevski's approach to documentary filmmaking is unique. He criticizes the pompous presentation often seen in documentaries, where filmmakers resort to manipulative techniques like swelling music and guiding voice-overs. To avoid these pitfalls, "Good People" is kept extremely ascetic, austere, and minimalist. All interviews are conducted against a black background, with survivors wearing dark clothes, and no archival footage is used.
